COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shoppers at Park Plaza Mall will see a security boost as the Little Rock Police Department will open a public safety annex inside the mall in six to eight weeks—just before the busy holiday season. The decision, made by the city board, aims to restore safety and confidence at the shopping destination after past incidents.  ABC 7
  • The Downtown Little Rock Partnership will hold its 14th annual Food Truck Festival in a new green space under 30 Crossing Bridge on Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than 70 food trucks, sports games and live music will be featured plus visitors can view park design plans and share their ideas.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Southern Tail Brewing in Little Rock will host 'Purr-fectly Crafted' on Friday from 5 to 10 p.m.—celebrating International Cat Day with local artists and on-site cat adoptions by Community Cats of Central Arkansas. The Arts & Science Center in Pine Bluff will host DIY Sticker day Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. where attendees learn basic sticker design skills.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Guitar Wars: Revenge of the Riffs will take place Saturday at Ron Robinson Theater in downtown Little Rock—amateur musicians from Arkansas will perform and compete in a live music contest.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials at a recent meeting of the Arkansas Board of Corrections approved an anti-recidivism program backed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders to assist inmates scheduled for release in six months, starting with 100 inmates at each facility. In the program, case managers will help inmates secure personal documents, find housing and employment and connect with community groups—officials said funding will come from existing state resources.  FOX 16
  • American political scientist Norman Finkelstein will speak on current events in Gaza and Palestine this Saturday, August 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Millennium Church on 21 Lakeshore Drive — the event, hosted by Little Rock Peace for Palestine, will include a keynote, a Q&A session, and civic activities like writing letters to elected officials.  THV 11
  • North Little Rock Police Department has used drones like the Anzu Raptor T with thermal imaging since 2008 to reduce manpower and improve response to scenes such as accidents and missing persons. Little Rock Police started their drone program in March to document scenes and assist in searches—helping keep officers and the community safer.  FOX 16
