- ➤ The Arkansas State Fair had 42,178 visitors on October 13 as families enjoyed rides, food, and special days like Kiddie Day and Military Appreciation with discount deals available today. The fair will finish on October 19 with ongoing attractions for all ages. ABC 7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ PotlatchDeltic and Rayonier announced Tuesday they will merge in an all-stock deal worth about $8.2 billion, creating the second-largest publicly traded timber company in North America with a portfolio of roughly 4.2 million acres mostly in the South—its new company will have a debt plan, a headquarters in Atlanta, and be led by Rayonier’s CEO. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new study by Voices of Gen Z: Arkansas Youth shows that over half of Gen Z in Arkansas are thriving, with 51% overall and 65% of K-12 students meeting Gallup's thriving criteria—exceeding last year's rates and the national average. The report credits better school engagement and youth confidence in their futures for these gains. THV 11
- ➤ University of Central Arkansas has joined the Next Generation Service Corps, making it the first college in Arkansas to join the national network that gets students ready for work in public service. Officials said a $41,485 grant from the Volcker Alliance will fund the program—led by Kim Hoffman, Joe Howard, and Kisha Hardwick—with the first group of students starting in January. FOX 16
- ➤ The University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock will launch a new avionics program to train students as Aircraft Electronics Technicians using hands-on work and is funded by a $2.5 million Arkansas HIRED grant. A ribbon-cutting will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the college’s Aerospace Technology Center on West Maryland Avenue—where guided tours will show the training setup. FOX 16
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crossover Wind, a 135 megawatt wind farm near Wynne in Cross County, began operating in June with 33 Vestas turbines that can power 50,000 homes—Cordelio Power developed the project and said it is running smoothly. Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arkansas DHS said if the shutdown continues, November SNAP benefits may not be funded even though all eligible Arkansans received October benefits. More than 222,000 people rely on SNAP, and if funds run out, officials will send families to food pantries—but these may not be able to meet all the needs. THV 11
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The UAMS Milk Bank said a freezer failure on the weekend forced staff to discard stored breast milk and they now ask mothers with extra milk to donate—supporting fragile and premature babies in need. FOX 16
- ➤ The UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute in Little Rock will offer low-dose CT lung cancer screenings on Nov 8 from 8 a.m. to noon — each screening takes about 15 minutes and targets adults at risk from a smoking history or related factors. Appointments are required — call 501-526-5777 to schedule a screening and take advantage of free parking in the UAMS parking deck. FOX 16
