- ➤ On opening day, more than 49,000 visitors attended the Arkansas State Fair as officials relied on over 100 officers, live cameras, and on-site EMTs—measures that kept the event safe and family-friendly. The fair, which enforces a clear bag policy and a no-weapons rule, runs through October 19. FOX 16
- ➤ Maumelle Police Officer Christopher M. Stroud—who served 26 years and lost his battle with cancer—will be honored today during a public viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.—held at First Baptist Church of Mayflower—with a funeral service open to the public to follow. THV 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, volunteers at First Ward Living Grace Food Pantry in Pine Bluff filled boxes with food supplies provided by the Arkansas Foodbank to help those affected by the government shutdown—federal employees who received layoff notices on Friday may face delays in benefits if the shutdown continues. - ➤ Rolly Hoyt delivered Arkansas's nightly headlines on October 13, reporting that Little Rock firefighters received a historic contract boost+ details of the new agreement have not been released. City officials said they will update the public soon+ the boost is seen as a key step in strengthening fire service support. THV 11
- ➤ Arkansas Congressman Rick Crawford announced a bill to help farmers by suspending limits on payments for two key programs for the 2025 crop year. The law drafted with Rep. Julia Letlow lets farmers choose a 50% partial payment by December 1 and will be introduced when the House returns to session. FOX 16
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UAMS received an $11.7 million award from the National Institutes of Health to launch the Maternal and Reproductive Community Health Excellence research center—this center will train three new researchers and host a national conference in spring to advance care in rural areas. FOX 16
- ➤ Due to rate hikes and the loss of federal subsidies, more than 166,000 Arkansans will face higher costs for Affordable Care Act coverage starting in 2026. Enrollment increased after subsidies were introduced in 2021 and, without tax credits, some premiums could rise by up to 153% — with open enrollment running from Nov. 1 to Jan. 15. FOX 16
- ➤ Our Blood Institute said its blood supply has dropped to dangerously low levels—only one day’s worth remains—and O-negative, O-positive, and platelet donations are at critical lows. The institute is importing blood from the East Coast and urges healthy residents to donate soon—each donation can help meet hospital needs. FOX 16
