COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A nonprofit that helps domestic abuse survivors updated Rotary Club 99 in Little Rock on its new shelter—currently under construction—at a meeting held on Oct. 7.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Neighbors across Little Rock gathered Tuesday night for National Night Out, a decades-old event that united families, city leaders, and officers in discussions focused on safety and trust—strengthening the bonds within the community.  FOX 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today in Jacksonville, the GROW program was launched to teach students financial literacy by depositing funds in their Arkansas 529 accounts—money that can help cover future education costs or other needs. Dan Andrews of Tempus Reality Partners said the program started at Murrell Taylor Elementary and is now open for use in other areas.  FOX 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Little Rock Board of Directors voted 2-6 to deny reappointment of 72-year-old Karen Buchanan to the housing authority board as some directors wanted a commissioner with stronger business experience—her term expired on Sept. 30 and a replacement must be named within 30 days.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Attorney General Tim Griffin spoke in Little Rock on Tuesday about how social media is affecting young people's mental health—Sanders pointed out the irony in her fight against big tech given her earlier support for the industry.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Attorney General Tim Griffin is hosting a two-day Social Media Summit at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock to explain how scammers use social media to target young people—experts lead sessions to teach online safety. More than 1,200 educators, law enforcement officers, parents and nonprofit leaders are attending and will gain tools to better protect children as the summit continues through today.  FOX 16
  • City Director Lance Hines introduced a resolution at the Oct. 6 Board meeting asking Ward 2 Director Ken Richardson to resign—he has missed meetings due to health issues while still drawing over $35,000. The resolution states that a removal election may be held mid-2026 with the board appointing a temporary replacement until the November general election.  FOX 16
  • Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended a plan to build a new 3,000-bed prison on 815 acres north of Charleston amid criticism from Franklin County Sheriff Johnny Crocker, who labeled the selected site as fiscally irresponsible. Sanders said the expansion is needed to ease overcrowding and prevent the early release of dangerous criminals—relying on state surpluses to fund the project.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Gov. Sanders signed an executive order that added $30,000 to the Disaster Response and Recovery Fund to help cover costs from the severe storms and tornadoes on March 14. The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management will use the funds to defray program and administrative expenses — officials noted the move aims to ease recovery efforts.  THV 11

  • Little Rock Catholic led after Tuesday's first round of the Class 6A boys state golf tournament at Burns Park in North Little Rock—junior Jack Denery and senior Reece Johnson posted strong rounds to give the team a two-shot advantage over Rogers and Fayetteville.
