COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers gathered at Perryville’s Heifer Ranch on August 9 to pick watermelons for the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance’s annual Watermelon Crawl—designed to fight food insecurity—and many traveled from Little Rock and North Little Rock. The event, held in partnership with Heifer International, filled boxes with fruit and provided snacks, water and lunch to support local families.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Entergy filed an application with the Public Service Commission to build a 754-megawatt natural gas plant called Jefferson Power Station near the closing White Bluff Plant—if approved, construction will begin in Q2 as the project is expected to power over 355,000 homes and generate $2.9 billion in economic benefits. SWEPCO is seeking commission approval to use a strategic investment rider for two out-of-state gas projects as part of a proposed rate increase.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Little Rock Police are searching for suspect Ricky Minor in connection with a 2023 homicide on North Chicot Road—if anyone has information, please call LRPD Detectives at 501-371-4660 or 501-371-4829.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kempner Theater *opened in downtown Little Rock in 1910 as an opera house* and was remodeled in 1921 and 1929 when it became the Arkansas Theater to show films and live events. It closed in 1977 and was demolished in 1995, with the site now a parking lot near the Lafayette Building.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Bunco Squad, a new play by Jim Hesselman featuring longtime friends who drink, eat & reminisce, will launch its 12:30 p.m. preview matinees on Aug. 20 and 27 at Murry’s Dinner Playhouse before running evening shows Wednesday through Saturday, while SIX: Teen Edition will present a family-friendly twist on the hit musical at Argenta Contemporary Theater with performances Wednesday through Friday evenings, Saturday matinee and evening, and a Sunday matinee.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arkansas public school district officials feel uncertain about a court order that will be issued Monday to limit Ten Commandments displays in schools. They are reviewing guidance as the ruling raises key legal questions for future school policies.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, about 100 protesters gathered outside the Governor’s Mansion to welcome Gov. Sanders back and challenge the use of taxpayer dollars for trips to Israel and the UAE, and a brief fight erupted when a protester splashed water on a man accused of counterprotesting. The demonstration was organized by Little Rock Peace for Palestine, and police said the altercation is under investigation — officials reported no further details.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Legislature set aside funds earlier this year for a multimillion-dollar security upgrade at the Capitol—new vehicle barriers and gates will be installed to boost safety.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
