ECONOMY NEWS

  • A recent study by GoBankingRates.com using U.S. Census data shows Arkansas is ranked 8th out of 50 states for income inequality with a Gini score of 0.4807. The study found the bottom 20 percent hold 3.16% of wealth while the top 5 percent hold 23.37%—with average incomes of $13,044 for the bottom 20 percent, $212,270 for the top 20 percent, and $385,873 for the top 5 percent.  FOX 16
  • Sustained high water and fast currents on the Arkansas River—caused by heavy rains upstream in Oklahoma and Kansas—are impeding commercial shipments and slowing recreational boating at the Port of Little Rock. A local marina owner said these conditions delay business operations and affect the local boating community.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Little Rock’s Dunbar Middle School is moving toward national recognition for its role in African American history, education, and civil rights—backed by a federal grant and a unanimous vote from the Historic District Commission; the proposal will next be reviewed by the state board.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas Department of Human Services warned SNAP users today to secure their accounts and reset their PINs amid rising scams aimed at stealing benefits. Officials said consumers should check for suspicious devices at card-reading machines and call 1-800-997-9999 to reset their PINs — a step to help prevent unauthorized use.  KARK
  • Arkansas Lottery officials said that two Arkansans, S. Hughes of Atkins and Travis S. of Roland, won $50,000 each playing the Frenzy scratch-off game. Hughes told officials he bought his ticket after a work vehicle broke down and plans to use his winnings to repair his truck & expand his business, while Travis S. said he will save his prize & cover future needs.  KARK

  • Lyon College School of Dental Medicine is set to host its Give Kids a Smile Day on Friday, July 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at 5 Allied Drive, Building 5 in the Riverdale neighborhood—providing free oral health screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and dental education for children and adults.  KARK
  • Senator John Boozman (R-AR) was given the Champion of Academic Medicine Award by the Association of American Medical Colleges for his support of medical education and research. He introduced the Physicians for Underserved Areas Act and the REDI Act in March to expand residency opportunities and help rural communities.  ABC 7
