  • The film 'Animals Are Over' will be shown at George’s Majestic Lounge on July 4 and will mix VHS horror with surreal comedy, featuring a raccoon in a birthday hat and a family singing 'Happy Birthday.' EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arkansas's first dental school at Lyon College School of Dental Medicine welcomed its inaugural class of 80 students (43% from Arkansas) in Little Rock's Riverdale neighborhood, where orientation begins Monday and classes start July 7. The state-of-the-art facility offers classrooms, a simulation clinic and a 100-chair patient care clinic for public dental services and student training.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Patricia Washington McGraw, a respected educator and author who founded a private school for Black children in Little Rock, died Wednesday at age 90. She taught at local colleges and inspired her community with a dedication—leaving a lasting legacy.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • An orangutan at the Little Rock Zoo died earlier this week from encephalitis + veterinary staff and specialists could not stop his worsening condition. Kota, born on Feb. 23, 2024 to Berani and Bandar, quickly captured the hearts of guests and staff + zoo officials said he will be greatly missed.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Little Rock church held a stem cell drive Saturday to find a match for Roxanne Pumphrey, a 61-year-old grandmother with myelodysplastic syndrome, partnering with DKMS+ the largest donor center in the world. About 35 people were tested by 11 a.m. and doctors will confirm potential matches while DKMS covers travel expenses if needed.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
