  • Staff at the Little Rock Zoo are mourning the death of Kota — the youngest male orangutan born on February 23 to parents Berani and Bandar — who died earlier this week from encephalitis.  THV 11

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle crash near Mile Marker 154.4 on I-40 near North Little Rock caused heavy traffic on Friday evening—no injuries have been reported.  FOX 16

CULTURE NEWS

  • In the 1940s, U.S. 67 was paved and small motorist services sprang up—like Boley’s "All New 2 for $3 Court", a four-room stop with tiled walls—and today the site is used by a veterinary clinic.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Little Rock School Board voted to let the district apply for the Community Eligibility Provision program that will offer free breakfast to every student and free lunch at all but Forest Park, Don R. Roberts, and Jefferson Elementary when classes resume in August. More than 17,800 students will benefit as this move aims to reduce meal debt + ease the paperwork burden for families and the district.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Officials at Lyon College announced Friday that its new dental school in Little Rock welcomed its inaugural class of dental students from 17 states, with 43% from Arkansas and 33% from nearby states. The group includes 17 first-generation college students and three active-duty Army members, and over 60% have previous dental clinic experience (with cumulative GPA averages of 3.50 overall and 3.36 in science).  KARK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arkansas Crime Information Center upgraded its NeverForgotten website so that missing persons information updates in real time and sends alerts to law enforcement+support organizations. The system sent 21 notifications since launching last Wednesday, helping authorities act quickly on cases.  KARK
  • State Rep. Carlton Wing from North Little Rock said he will not run for reelection as his ten years of service ends in 2026—he will continue serving as Speaker Pro tem until December and plans to work on church missions with his wife after his term concludes.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Human Services is working with Baptist Health to expand a home visit program for expecting mothers in Little Rock and North Little Rock. Mothers enrolled in ARHOME or Medicaid with high-risk pregnancies may get help with housing, childcare, and other services—this program is funded by both state and federal sources.  THV 11
