Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 27th of June.
Good morning, Little Rock.
DKMS will host a stem cell donor drive Saturday in Little Rock from 8 a.m. to noon at Saint Mark Baptist Church-Education Center on West 12th Street—healthy adults aged 18 to 55 can register to help find matches for patients needing transplants for blood cancers, blood disorders, and immune issues.
Andre Lajuan Wright, a 34-year-old parolee for a past shooting, was sentenced to eight years in prison for stabbing a man who said he bested him in a fistfight outside a Little Rock home — he pleaded guilty to burglary and battery — according to sentencing papers filed on Monday.
North Little Rock police arrested two suspects in connection with the June 24 homicide of 54-year-old Clifton Hall Jr. along Chandler Street—21-year-old Deshanti Lewis is charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery while 22-year-old Kameron Johnson surrendered on June 25 and now faces additional charges of second-degree battery and fleeing.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced seven finalists for the 2025 Arkansas Food Hall of Fame—restaurants from Little Rock, Blytheville, Camden, and other cities.
The Division of Arkansas Heritage will hold an induction event this fall to honor the state’s culinary legacy.
A new AP—NORC poll shows most U.S. adults support having religious chaplains help students in public schools while fewer favor turning religious schools into tax-supported public charter schools.
The survey shows clear splits among religious groups and may affect plans as lawmakers consider similar measures after Texas allowed chaplains in schools in 2023.
The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration warned on Thursday about a text scam that pretended to be from the DMV and threatened license suspension for unpaid traffic tickets.
The agency said the text contains a link that is not on the official website (this is the second scam alert in June).
The Corrections Board approved spending $50,000 to drill two test wells at an 815-acre proposed prison site in Franklin County so contractors could assess if there is enough water to support construction; officials will look for alternate water sources if local supply falls short (the board voted 6-0). This test will guide plans for the largest prison in Arkansas, which is expected to use 300,000 to 500,000 gallons of water a day.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in an opinion piece Thursday that Congress should remove a provision from the Big Beautiful Bill—one that stops states from regulating artificial intelligence for 10 years—and argued that existing Arkansas laws protecting citizens from abuse must stand.
