COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Baja Grill, a beloved eatery in Little Rock Heights, will close its doors for the final time on June 28 after 11 years of service while its Benton location stays open. The restaurant thanked its customers for support since it launched its food truck in 2012.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Punch Brothers will perform their acoustic folk show, 'An Evening with the Punch Brothers,' at The Hall in Little Rock on June 15. The Grammy-winning band—started by Chris Thile in New York—will tour with a mix of new songs and classic tunes.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lyon College broke ground Thursday morning in Cabot on the state’s first school of veterinary medicine — a new center that will include classrooms, labs, and a teaching hospital to help ease the shortage of veterinarians in rural areas. The college will welcome its first class of veterinary students in 2026.  KARK
  • North Little Rock's Thea Foundation received a $7.9 million grant from the Windgate Foundation to fund its Art Closet and Art Reconstruction programs that give art supplies to teachers and students. The grant includes a $7.5 million endowment + a $400,000 bridge grant that will help the foundation expand its work.  KARK
  • UALR’s Bowen School of Law celebrated its 50th anniversary on Thursday during the Arkansas Bar Association meeting in Hot Springs—alumni praised the school for providing affordable, quality legal education that prepares students with hands-on training and real-world experience. The panel highlighted how the school’s practical courses and service clinics have helped more than 4,500 graduates succeed as lawyers.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Pulaski County Special School District’s interim superintendent Jerry Guess did not renew communications director Jessica Duff’s contract after reprimanding her for alleged misconduct and bypassing part of the grievance process before the new superintendent takes office on July 1—community members question the motives as Duff plans to file a second grievance after the board voted 5—2 to dismiss her initial appeal.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pulaski County Circuit Judge Patricia James ordered Little Rock to seek a waiver (within 10 days) from the Arkansas History Commission for removing its Confederate monument from MacArthur Park. The ruling, issued on June 10 after a bench trial on May 22, focused on whether the city followed the 2021 Arkansas State Capitol and Historic Preservation Act.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
