COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Central Arkansas Development Council will host five food giveaways starting Monday, May 18 at Arkadelphia Senior Center; Benton on May 20, Malvern on May 22, Hope on May 26, and Lonoke on May 28 require valid photo ID plus county residency and begin at 9 a.m.  ABC 7
  • The Pulaski County Fair began yesterday and runs until May 24 in North Little Rock, offering daily schedules with opening day hours from 5 to 11 p.m. (varied timings apply through the week) for local families to enjoy rides, games, and food stalls.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new $13 million fire station in North Little Rock will open in early June – the building at Main and West 13th will house emergency vehicles and living space for 14 firefighters and use new technology to improve response times.  ABC 7
  • First responders in Hot Springs tested new rescue equipment on Lake Hamilton on Friday, ahead of expected heavy boating traffic for Memorial Day weekend; crews practiced lifting sunken vessels & reviewing emergency response protocols to ensure safety.  THV 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The new Arkansas Summer EBT program will offer $120 in food benefits per eligible child starting July 1 to help fight childhood hunger this summer. Benefits cannot cover soda or candy so families can make healthier choices.  ABC 7

  • Temperatures are rising and local nurseries now offer a range of tropical plants that thrive in summer heat. Garden centers stock hibiscus, mandevilla, and bougainvillea to help gardeners keep their yards blooming.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Arkansas junior golfer Maria Jose Marin — the defending NCAA champion — is one of 10 finalists for the ANNIKA Award. Voting opened May 15 and will close May 25 as she helped lead the Razorbacks to a third straight NCAA Championships berth.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • On Thursday, officials ended a Class 6A boys soccer state tournament match early after Fayetteville players refused to continue play following reported racial abuse (Conway, leading 2 to 1, was awarded the win and advanced before losing in the semifinals).  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
