BUSINESS NEWS

  • Central Arkansas Water received $355,000 in incentives from Entergy to boost energy efficiency at its downtown office. The program, launched in 2021, helped replace faulty occupancy sensors and eliminate space heaters for improved HVAC performance.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • A postcard capture from 1910 shows an Elks parade at Fifth and Main with the old State National Bank and a dental clinic that offered gold crowns for $3. The image launched Arkansas Postcard Past on April 14, 1986 — 40 years ago — thanks to loyal readers.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Barnes and Noble on Financial Center Parkway hosted an in-store book fair on April 11 and will accept online contributions through April 16 to support the Reading in the Rock program for elementary students in west Little Rock.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas is asking the U.S. Department of Education to waive federal requirements that slow down using Title funds, and the state seeks more flexibility in managing its roughly $200 million in annual grants. Public comments are accepted until May 7 and the changes are expected to take effect next school year.  ABC 7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service is evaluating quartz mining on 337 acres of Ouachita National Forest in Saline and Garland counties with public comments open until early May. The draft plan proposes small-scale exploration that might lead to larger open-pit mining while including guidelines to protect water sources like Lake Winona.  THV 11

  • Alex Collins was posthumously inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame at the Oaklawn Event Center in Hot Springs last week. The former Razorback running back was honored for his standout college career that ranked him among the SEC's elite.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas baseball junior TJ Pompey earned SEC player of the week after going 7 for 16 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI in the Razorbacks’ recent series against Little Rock and Alabama, raising his batting average to .267 and boosting his confidence in his return.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
