BUSINESS NEWS

  • Entergy crews across Arkansas are trimming trees and clearing brush near power lines using satellite imagery+AI to reduce outage risk as severe weather nears; the company urges homeowners to plant trees responsibly near transmission lines. Projects will continue through the spring.  ABC 7
  • Littlefield's Cafe on John F Kennedy Blvd at the Indian Hills Shopping Center will close after service on Sunday, April 26. Owners Shelton and Sandy Littlefield thanked the community for 13 years of meals, meetings and memories.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • OmniTRAX announced on Thursday that it will acquire three railroads from Arkansas Shortlines Railroad Inc, including the Dardanelle & Russellville Railroad, Ouachita Railroad, and Camden & Southern Railroad; operations will begin on June 1.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Dreamland Lounge, located in the Arkansas Flag and Banner building (800 W. Ninth St.), is hosting soft openings this weekend from Thursday to Saturday, 5-10 p.m. with a $5 cover that supports Friends of Dreamland, and it will hold a second weekend of openings April 16-18.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • An old postcard shows Woodmen of the World members with axes in Conway circa 1910, tracing their start in Nebraska in 1890. The group provided insurance and is still known for its tree-shaped grave markers seen in local cemeteries (a unique part of our past).  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and conservation groups are restoring Bayou Bartholomew in east Arkansas with new access points and landings as part of a five-year, $16 million project. Phase one will finish by the end of 2026.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The US Army Corps of Engineers is accepting public comments until May 1 on a $6B data center planned for 145th Street near Wrightsville. The facility will support AI + cloud computing and create over 500 permanent jobs while needing 150 megawatts of power.  ABC 7
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started a public comment period for Google's planned data center in Southeast Little Rock near Sweet Home— the project will include five industrial buildings and support offices drawing 100 megawatts and is under evaluation for environmental impact with comments due by May 1.  THV 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bonnie Deas, the 5-foot-9 transfer guard from Arkansas who averaged 10.2 points and 9 rebounds per game, committed to join UCLA following the Bruins’ national championship win — a 79-51 victory over South Carolina on Sunday.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas baseball will face Alabama today at 6 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa (venue capacity is 8,500) as Hunter Dietz makes his first start while Alabama’s Tyler Fay, who once threw a no-hitter, is set to pitch in the game.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Former Razorback Alex Collins (renowned for his joyful plays) is being posthumously inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame today, honoring his talent and lasting impact on local football.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Grace McCallop announced her commitment to Arkansas women’s basketball on Thursday. A native of Kansas City, Kansas, and a three-time Class 4A champion from Bishop Miege, she is the Razorbacks’ first transfer addition this offseason – expected to add depth behind veteran guards.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
