COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Little Rock Compassion Center plans to expand by converting a nearly 60,000 square foot former office on West Roosevelt into transitional housing for up to 100 residents—each paying $700 a month and required to secure a job before renting. Pastor William Holloway leads the renovations with over $1 million in donations and said the project will ease shelter overcrowding as it opens for men later this summer, with the women's area to follow soon after.  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Bagel Shop in downtown Little Rock will permanently close in May. Owners (Trevor Papsadora and Myles Roberson) said the shop at (1501 Main Street) will remain open through April amid a decline in sales and slow weekday traffic.  FOX 16

CRIME NEWS

  • Officials with the Pulaski County sheriff’s office announced an arrest in connection with the Sunday homicide of a woman—further details were not released.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Leanne Morgan will bring her Just Getting Started tour to Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock on September 5. Tickets will go on sale April 4 at 10 a.m.—added dates came after high demand and sold-out shows across the country.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Nebraska-based search firm McPherson and Jacobson recommended six finalists for Pulaski County Special School District’s next superintendent—five of whom work in Arkansas—while the board will interview the candidates on April 9 and April 10. The school board approved the list after a Monday night meeting and prior public input sessions.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials at the Little Rock housing authority are considering asking the city for a large bailout—possibly a lump sum—to delay a pending foreclosure on the Madison Heights apartment complex. Attorney Mark Stodola said a court will hear motions on April 29 and discussions with Mayor Scott have taken place about finding a financial solution.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Two bills filed Monday aimed to lower Arkansas' recidivism rate by starting inmate training and education from day one of incarceration. Senate Bill 590 and House Bill 1931—sponsored by Sen. Ben Gilmore and Rep. Howard Beaty—provide for assessments, reentry plans, and incentives such as extra phone time, and they will take effect immediately if signed into law.  KARK
