CULTURE NEWS

  • Mame Stewart Josenberger began as a teacher before taking over local businesses in Fort Smith and Taborian Heights after her husband’s death; she led community organizations that opened new opportunities for Black Arkansans in the early 1900s.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Karthik Dalai, a sixth-grade student from East Hills Middle School in Greenwood, won the Arkansas State Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 7 at the Vines Center in Little Rock after spelling the word "paratactic".  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Maumelle voters passed six proposals on a half-cent sales tax Tuesday but rejected a turf plan aimed at boosting youth sports—leaving parents disappointed as they watch community projects move forward.  THV 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Thomas Kang of UAMS advised adults in Little Rock to begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 45, while those with a family history should start earlier (10 years before a relative's diagnosis). He said early detection can lead to more treatable outcomes.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • After winning 88-84 over Missouri on Saturday, March 7 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Arkansas head coach John Calipari and players Meleek Thomas and Malique Ewin answered questions in a postgame press conference while Missouri coaches also spoke after their loss.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The No. 9 Arkansas softball team beat No. 12 Georgia 7-6 at Bogle Park on Saturday as Tianna Bell’s first-inning grand slam set the tone, forcing a rubber match scheduled for today at 1 p.m. on SEC Network.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Today, participants completed a nearly 19-mile Norwegian Foot March at Camp Robinson while carrying over 30 pounds of gear. The event showcased physical and mental resilience as nearly 40 finishers pushed themselves to maintain a steady pace.  ABC 7
