CULTURE NEWS

  • Temple B’nai Israel dedicated its restored grand piano on Saturday, Jan. 16, and Rabbi Barry Block said the instrument—built about 150 years ago—is a survivor of Nazi Germany that now enriches the congregation’s music.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Arkansas saw a record $291.1 million in medical marijuana sales in 2025 with a $15 million increase over the previous year; dispensaries sold 79,223 pounds of product while state taxes collected $32.3 million and 115,113 patient cards remain active, according to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.  ABC 7
  • Rep. French Hill introduced the Main Street Capital Access Act which would ease regulations for community banks (such as Stone Bank, a local institution with over $850 million in assets) so local lenders can better serve the needs of farmers, small businesses, and families.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Enrollment in Arkansas colleges + universities rose above pre-pandemic levels this year, according to data from the Arkansas Division of Higher Education. The increase shows a steady growth in local higher education.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials held a Friday morning briefing launching a 24-hour operation to pre-treat roads ahead of a winter storm expected to bring sleet and snow from Friday evening into early next week. An emergency shelter opened at Dunbar Community Center at 6 p.m., and residents are urged to stay home.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management activated its State Emergency Operations Center as a winter storm that began Friday night and is expected to continue through the weekend, prompting officials to coordinate responses and allocate resources (forecasts show hazardous road conditions and possible power outages).  ABC 7
  • The Public Service Commission approved SWEPCO’s request Friday, and residential customers will see their monthly utility bills rise by 23%. Arkansas households should review their bills + adjust budgets when the new rates apply.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The City of Little Rock announced on Friday its plan to treat and clear roads as winter weather rolls in — Public Works crews will work in 12-hour shifts along nine designated snow routes and use sand/salt stockpiles at four locations to speed up clearing secondary roads and neighborhood streets.  THV 11

  • Local high school basketball teams posted strong wins as girls and boys squads delivered standout scores on Saturday, January 24, 2026, with players like Kynlli Chaten and Easton McCollough leading decisive matchups (team records ranged widely).
