CULTURE NEWS

  • Little Rock in 1913 saw sales rep Ben Schaad mail postcards to rice farmers promoting a traction engine built to maneuver around flooded fields; he was born in 1876 and died in 1936.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Anticipating storm, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra moved its Masterworks concerts from Saturday/Sunday to Thursday at Robinson Center Performance Hall (426 West Markham St. at Broadway) with Alexander Kerr as soloist. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Southwest Power Pool announced Tuesday it is moving forward with a $150 million project that will add about 190 jobs, including 165 in local offices, by the end of 2027. The project will create new roles in engineering, IT and market administration as the company expands its energy services regionally.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eugene Krupitsky and incumbent Tony Rose are competing for the Zone 4 seat on the Little Rock School Board on March 3 (early voting starts February 16). Krupitsky plans to boost school marketing while Rose aims to improve math programs amid a shrinking board.  THV 11
  • Candidates Eugene Krupitsky and incumbent Tony Rose detailed their proposals for improvements if elected to the Little Rock School Board Zone 4 today. They both focused on enhancing classroom resources and boosting community involvement (each proposing different strategies) ahead of the upcoming vote.  THV 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas State Parks conducted prescribed burns on Pinnacle Mountain Tuesday to remove dead leaves, dying bushes and invasive species; the popular trail was closed that day to ensure a safe landscape for nearby hikers.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

FINANCE NEWS

  • Bank OZK reported a fourth-quarter profit of $171.9 million Tuesday, down from $178.1 million, with loans + deposits growing steadily and net interest income up 7.3% from last year. The bank will host a conference call today at 7:30 a.m. for investors.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews in Little Rock are preparing for a heavier winter storm later this week, with more than 17 snow plows ready to treat major roads before moving into neighborhoods. Entergy is monitoring potential ice conditions that could impact power lines and equipment.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach John Calipari adjusted the starting lineup as the Razorbacks won 93-68 over Vanderbilt on Tuesday night at Walton Arena in Fayetteville. Freshman Meleek Thomas and returning Karter Knox helped spark an early surge that maintained the home winning streak.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas football signed JUCO cornerback DJ Hairston from Hinds Community College after he posted 16 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 4 pass breakups in 2025; he becomes the Razorbacks’ third junior college signee.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
