COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A grant has opened plans to reimagine West 9th Street, which stays quiet unless there are events at The Hall or Dreamland Ballroom; local leaders + community participants gathered at a workshop on Thursday, Jan. 15 to begin discussions on future changes.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Community members met yesterday in North Little Rock to discuss reviving the closed Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub. Founders and local supporters are seeking funding, space, and community ideas to bring back the creative space—an important hub for artists and makers.  THV 11
  • A meeting in North Little Rock is set to re-launch the Innovation Hub (a creative center that closed last month) and aims to revive local collaboration. Organizers plan to welcome community members soon.  THV 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Forbes' annual ranking names 19 wealth management teams in Arkansas, evaluating assets, compliance and industry experience. Little Rock firm Gibbs, Marquez, Bloomberg + Holbert leads with $1.7 billion in assets while The Monk, Mitchell, Williams, Vincent + McCauley Group and Jackson-Engskov and Associates, part of Merril Wealth Management, round out the top three.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longer Than Smoke, an exhibit by Chicago-based Taiwanese artist Pei-Hsuan Wang, opens today at 420 S. Byrd St. with a reception from 4-7 p.m. and runs through March 14 (admission is free).  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Three Amigo's Restaurante in midtown offers authentic Mexican food with tacos, fajitas and exclusive off-menu dishes—Manager Alicia Mendoza said the family-run spot has delighted locals for over 20 years at 7710 Cantrell Road.  THV 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting starts Tuesday, Feb. 17 for a Little Rock school board election triggered by a state law that reduced the board from nine to seven members - new zoning maps place candidates in seven zones with four running uncontested while district officials urge voters to participate.  THV 11
  • State legislators questioned DHS and dental leaders today + they sought answers on improving access to dental care for Medicaid patients and adults with special needs in Little Rock. Lawmakers aim to enhance coordination among state agencies and care providers.  THV 11
  • The Little Rock School District board is expected to downsize soon, which may reduce seats on the board and change how families are represented. Officials will announce more details on the future board structure in the coming weeks + outline the changes in decision-making.  THV 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases are rising in Arkansas as state health officials report over 20 flu-related deaths and 650 hospital admissions so far this season. They urge residents to get vaccinated and follow basic prevention measures (such as frequent handwashing and covering coughs).  THV 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Tennessee kicker Max Gilbert joined Arkansas after entering the NCAA transfer portal on Jan. 2; he said coach Silverfield’s high school visit made the move a natural choice+ he is excited to reconnect with SEC football.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The UCA men’s basketball team won 62 to 60 in overtime against Jacksonville on Thursday night at the Farris Center. Freshman guard Luke Moore scored a career-high 19 points after senior Camren Hunter left with a head injury.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
